COVID-19 is killing 120 people an hour in India. In Andhra Pradesh, an acute shortage of oxygen and other medical supplies is generating a public health nightmare. Over the past month, dozens have lost their lives due to a shortage of oxygen across the state. Social media is flooded with posts from distraught family members and friends pleading for basic things - from hospital beds to financial help. In many cases, help doesn’t arrive on time.
NTR Memorial Trust has been running a campaign “With You.. For You” to help COVID-19 affected people across AP and Telangana. The Trust has received around 600 requests for help. More than half of these requests came from people who were hospitalised and required financial assistance, while the others were struggling to find hospital beds. Almost 50% of these patients had comorbidities. 80% of those who reached out to us for help were not vaccinated. Unfortunately, in 10% of these cases, patients died before help could even reach them.
The idea behind our initiative is simple. Provide the patient with effective home treatment in the first week of Covid-19 symptoms. In a majority of the cases, the disease can be controlled with the right measures and cost-effective medicines. But most patients, due to lack of state support and health awareness, end up in hospitals in the latter stages of Covid-19 symptoms. With small-scale interventions by NTR Trust for hundreds and thousands of people, we prevent the need for expensive hospitals, we save lives, livelihoods, and people falling into poverty. Every penny you donate saves lakhs of rupees for a patient.
The NTR trust has been able to assist more than 540 people so far. We aim to reach out to at least 5,000 patients in Phase 1 and then ramp up the platform to reach 15,000 patients in Phase 2. We estimate that caring for each patient will cost between Rs. 3000-3500. We understand that each of you has had a tough time coping with the pandemic ramifications these past 15 months. You made sacrifices, suffered through grief, and continued to help others as much as possible. We humbly request you to help us rise to this challenge once again. As we continue to reach across more and more patients, the economics of scale will reduce the costs further. Every person saved will be another dream secured, another future reaching its potential. Every penny matters, so please donate what you can.
